FAQs
FAQs
When people are first introduced to us there are always lots of questions, some of which are answered here. You are welcome to contact us should our website be unsuccessful in answering those questions.
Frequently Asked Questions

Below, we have answered some of the more common questions we are often asked.

Why such an emphasis on quality?
Quality If a baby lying in one of our cradles was yours, and through no fault of your own she has lost you, what life would you wish upon her? Would your aspirations for her future evaporate, because you are no longer here? TLC cares for this baby as you would. As this baby grows and starts to explore her place in the world, TLC's philosophy is to stand beside her, allowing all the emerging gifts and talents she has to develop to their full potential.

To remain true to this philosophy, we remind you that as babies grow into children their needs change, but they do not diminish. It is an acknowledged fact that if you only address a child's basic needs you will be able to stretch your resources further. However, at the end of the day we would like to see adults with full hearts, minds and bodies not just full bellies.
How is TLC funded?
Funded The majority of TLC's funding takes the form of donations.

Often people will bring us gifts in kind and for these we are ever grateful. On occasion we receive financial donations from local people and organisations, as well as a paltry contribution from the government but the majority of our funding comes in from our friends around the globe.

What does TLC need?
TLC's Needs TLC needs your trust.

Often donors prescribe how their funds are spent, without a genuine knowledge of what the current need is. This means we may receive a donation to purchase a large number of nappies that we don't currently need, yet are unable to pay the monthly electricity bill. Whilst ALL donations are obviously deeply appreciated, prescriptive donations make it difficult to maintain financial stability on a monthly basis.

Our track record of financial transparency and credibility with independent bodies should stand testament to our integrity and financial responsibility. Our wish is that donors have faith in our judgment to allocate their donations appropriately. We are always happy to provide details of every penny spent, on request.

What can I send TLC from overseas?
Overseas Whilst we are grateful for any gifts we receive, there are a few things to bear in mind.

  • Most items are readily available in South Africa and can be purchased at prices comparable to other countries.
  • The cost of shipping a parcel to South Africa is high and often far exceeds the value of the gift.
  • There are often import and customs duties attached to parcels received which means TLC frequently incurs a high cost to retrieve the parcel from the postal service.
  • TLC does have a list of items that would be valuable to us and which are not readily available in South Africa. Should you wish to send a gift please contact TLC beforehand to discuss what would be best.
