Gifts for giving!

How would you like to help? This is what we need at present...

  • Nursery
  • Main House
  • Foundation Phase Edu.
  • Intermediate Phase Edu.
  • Senior Phase Edu.
  • Building

As you can imagine 30 babies consume large quantities of the basic necessities. They also utilise a considerable number of normal baby items.

Consumables we currently need in the nursery include:

Wet Wipes Nestum 1 - 3

Fragrance Free Aqueous Cream

Miltons Bottle brushes Purity
Fruit Juice Washing Powder Barrier Cream
Nan 1 or 2 Ribbed or Round Silicone Teats (NOT orthodontic or cross-cut teats) Purity
Rooibos Tea Small Dummies
Feeding bottles

At the moment we also need:

Bottle brushes Sippy Cups (Training cups)
Receiving Blankets Sleepsuits for babies 3 months and older
Hooded Bath Towels Face Cloths
Fitted Cot Sheets Long sleeve shirts and trousers for babies over 3 months

NAPPIES (DIAPERS)

We have 30 babies in nappies. Each baby uses between 5 and 8 nappies a day. We need to keep nappies of all sizes in stock. TLC is able to purchase Huggies disposable nappies at virtually cost price from the suppliers. As a result we request people wishing to contribute towards this essential part of our nursery operation not to donate actual nappies, but rather indicate that their donation is to be used for purchasing nappies OR alternatively to pay money directly into our account with the supplier and so keep this account in credit. Please contact Vivienne if you are interested in this option.

Our Main House houses more than 20 children, as well as providing for our team of volunteers, and consequently we use a lot... of everything.

WEEKLY GROCERIES

The TLC kitchen feeds more than 70 people at every meal (not including the infants on milk formula). Some of our food is donated and we are able to grow some food on our property, apart from this our grocery bill is approximately R6,000.00 a week. These groceries are purchased from Pick n Pay using their online facility. Part or all of one week's grocery purchases can be donated by contacting Pippa - she will place the order and the donor can then log onto our shopping profile and pay for the virtual trolley using their credit card.

STAINLESS STEEL CUTLERY

A lot of our cutlery is of a poor quality and has been damaged over time. With 70 people sitting down to each meal we really need long lasting quality stainless steel cutlery... of all sorts!

CROCKERY

Once again feeding 70 people at every meal means we continually need good quality, durable crockery... of all kinds... plates, bowls, side plates, mugs, glasses, cups etc...

CLOTHING

There is always a need for clothing for our growing children. At present we have an urgent need for underwear (socks, vests and underpants) especially for boys between 7 and 10 years old.

In South Africa adequate education is not provided without a cost, in order to make sure our children are educated we have to find sponsors to assist us.

If you would like to consider paying the tuition for one of our children for one year, please consult the table below for the requirements for 2010 for those children in the foundation phase that attend local primary schools.

In order to maintain a high quality of care we regularly have medium and larger projects in progress, to enable us to adapt to new requirements and growth. Some of the projects we are currently needing funding for are listed below. Should you be able to assist in any way please contact us.

Paving of all gravel paths and other common walkways

Many of the current walkways are narrow, gravel topped paths. This makes it difficult to push strollers (prams) along, and many of the toddlers have difficulty walking on these surfaces. To add to this these pathways become very muddy in wet weather, and when the small gravel gets onto the grassed areas lawnmowing can become a rather hazardous activity. We plan to create user friendly walkways using paving stones. We have approximately 100 meters of pathway length we wish to cover, and each path would need to be an average of 1.5 - 2 metres wide.

Perimeter Wall

Security is something we spend a lot of time and effort on at TLC. It is important to us that we keep all our little ones as well as their caregivers as safe as possible. We have therefore initiated a project to build a perimeter wall around the property. The cost of the wall is roughly R5 000 per 5 meter section. So far we are roughly half way around the property!

Cover pool and create child friendly play area

The nursery has been built around the existing swimming pool which served the original house. The swimming pool is a bit of an eyesore, and poorly situated. However with more than 25 young people living on the property a swimming pool is a necessity, as it provides healthy exercise and entertainment and ensures that all the children are capable swimmers. In addition the pool is used for therapeutic exercis for some of the physically challenged children.

The plan is to fill in the existing swimming pool and create a purpose built play area for crawling babies and toddlers. It would also be an area where younger babies from the nursery could be taken out into the fresh air in a safe environment. The project requires that a new swimming pool is built in a more suitable place on the property.
